Video Game Arm
This design is based on the metal arm sported by Jax Briggs from the Mortal Kombat video game series, and was a commission for a Halloween costume.
Since this design was part of a costume, the primary goal was to create an aesthetic design that would mimic the customer's preferred design from the games as closely as possible while still allowing a full range of motion that could be designed and fabricated in under 3 weeks. To meet both the timeline and range of motion goals, the arm was designed to only cover the bicep, forearm, and top of the shoulder while leaving the joints open. The braces on the interior surface of the arm were custom designed based on measurements the customer took from his arm to ensure a snug fit without being uncomfortable. The arm was designed in 12 segments (7 in the forearm, 4 in the upper arm, and 1 on the shoulder) to allow the parts to be manufactured using several smaller 3D printers to speed up the process, which could be attached with hook and loop tape, epoxy, or another adhesive of the customer's choice. To keep the costume as light as possible while remaining durable, the parts were designed to be printed at 20% infill.
